Right-Sizing Your Space: A Guide to Choosing and Positioning Artwork for Your Office
As business owners seek to entice employees back to the office, creating workspaces that people genuinely enjoy is more essential than ever. Displaying art in the office is one of the easiest ways to brighten up a professional environment, and its positive effects on employee morale and productivity go beyond just visual appeal. Yet, knowing where to start when designing an office art display can feel daunting. Fortunately, a few foundational principles can elevate any collection, and artwork sizing and positioning can be the most impactful of these seemingly small details. As art consultants who frequently assist clients in building corporate collections, we've seen how proper sizing and positioning can transform a workspace from simply functional to truly inspiring. With a few simple guidelines, you can make informed choices that improve the professional atmosphere and support employee well-being.
WHY OFFICE ART SIZING MATTERS
Properly scaled artwork creates visual interest without causing distraction. It reduces workplace stress, facilitates social interaction, promotes emotional stimulation, and projects professional competence to clients and visitors. Research consistently shows that thoughtfully designed offices significantly boost workplace productivity and leave strong first impressions on potential clients entering your space. Often, these benefits remain out of reach due to one simple oversight: not matching an artwork’s scale and placement to the space. Undersized art can suggest a lack of attention to detail or poor quality, while oversized pieces might seem wasteful or overwhelming. The aim is to strike a balance that communicates professionalism and thoughtfulness.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR SPACE
When it comes to art sizing, there are no strict rules, but certain principles can guide you in the right direction.
Match artwork size to room scale. Different office settings call for different art sizing strategies, and artwork should be roughly proportional to the space. A small office or workspace benefits from smaller artwork—think 18x24 or 20x30 inches. Larger spaces, such as reception areas and conference rooms, require bolder sizing choices that fill more space. When in doubt, sizing up rather than down typically produces better results.
Center artwork at eye level. The center of the artwork should sit roughly 60 inches from the ground. This height is the typical eye level and will ensure a comfortable viewing experience whether standing or sitting.
Consider wall coverage. In professional settings, artworks should aim to cover about 50-70% of continuous wall space to maintain a clean and uncluttered look. More conservative industries might prefer lower coverage, while more creative ones could go closer to 70%. Doors and shelves are obvious margins when measuring wall space, but also consider switches and outlets, which can break up a wall and make an artwork’s placement seem awkward.
Harmonize artwork with furniture. Artworks hanging above furniture should cover about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture’s width and hang 6-12 inches above its surface for the best visual effect. This creates a visual connection between the furniture and the art without distracting from desk activities or computer monitors.
Account for ceiling height. Most commercial offices have 8 or 9-foot ceilings, which complement artwork no taller than 36 inches. Lower ceilings under 8 feet benefit from horizontal emphasis and are suitable for landscape pieces to prevent a cramped feeling. On the other hand, high ceilings of 10 feet or more allow for bold and oversized artwork.
